Question of the Week 10/24/2020

Q: I need to run an irrigation line underneath a sidewalk. How do I do this?

A: This is never fun or easy to do. There is proper equipment to do this and you may be able to rent if from your local rental company.

If you want to do this yourself, the best way is to dig a whole about 2 feet wide and about a foot deep, tapering it away from the sidewalk on both sides.

Next, use the shovel to dig as far under the sidewalk as you can. Once the shovel can no longer make the angle, use a digging bar to break away dirt a few inches at a time until you break through to the other side. We highly recommend placing a 2" PVC pipe in the hole under the cement. Run the irrigation tube inside the PVC, then tape off both ends of PVC or shove a shirt inside the pipe to prevent dirt from filling the PVC.
