Question of the Week: Canales

Q: I have areas where the previous owner placed large slabs of slate under the canales. Would it be better to replace the slate with river rock?

A: As long as the slate was properly installed and works properly, the slate is doing what it was intended to do. The one thing the slate won't do is divert the water away from your house. The slate will help to break up the force of the water coming off the canale, which can reduce washout.

If you want a different look, or the water moved efficiently away from the home, then the river rock would be a great idea!
