Question of the Week: What are "zones"?
Q: I see on these plant cards something that refers to "Zones". What does it mean?
A: "Zones" is the standard to determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location.
In the case of Santa Fe County, the recommended plants are typically those suitable for zone 6 or lower. These plants are predominantly perennials, exhibiting the ability to regrow each year. However, local nurseries may offer plants suitable for zone 7 or higher, which can still be planted in Santa Fe but will behave as annuals.
As annuals, they would require replanting on a yearly basis. It is worth noting that Santa Fe County spans zones 5 and 6, with the specific zone varying depending on the region within the county.
