Opuntia phaeacantha - Zone 4 may survive lower
Green flat pads are covered in long cactus needles, as well as small, orange spiky hairs. In the spring beautiful yellow flowers emerge, some varieties have red bases.
Bees will often be seen collecting pollen in the Desert Prickly Pear. A small 2" purple edible fruit will begin to develop once the flower is spent. Plant in sandy, rocky soils and part to full sun. Minimal water is required. Can reach up to 4.5 feet long and wide.
