Question of the Week: Protecting Your Trees from Deer Damage

Q: I love seeing deer around my home, but they've started rubbing against my tree trunks, causing damage. How can I prevent further harm and is there any way to repair the damage that’s already been done?
A: Unfortunately, once a tree trunk is damaged, there isn't much that can be done to reverse it. The good news is that trees are resilient and will naturally heal over time as the wounded area callouses. To prevent future damage, consider wrapping the trunks with chicken wire or protective tubes. Deer repellents—whether sprays or electronic devices—can also be effective in keeping them away. These solutions are easily found online or at your local home improvement store.
