Use the flat shovel to scrape away the gravel or mulch that is covering the weed barrier. Once the hole is located, clear the area several inches wide and cut a piece of weed barrier approximately two times larger than the hole. Place the cut piece beneath the existing weed barrier (you

Q: Why do your workers disconnect my hoses from the house during the winter? A: Hoses need to be disconnected and drained when not being used during the winter months. If a hose is left connected to a faucet and freeze occurs, the expanding water can crack the faucet inside of the house. This will result in water damage within your walls and a costly call to a plumber. It is also a good idea to drain the hose after use to prevent water from freezing inside the hose, which wil

Question of the Week 01/16/2021
Q: Can I turn my irrigation system back on during the winter to water? A: Can you? Technically yes. Should you? No. There are many things that can go wrong when you turn your irrigation system on and off during the winter. Since water expands when frozen, it can easily crack a lot of the non-flexible parts within your irrigation system. These parts need to be properly drained as part of the winterization process of shutting down an irrigation system. If and when these compone

Simpler Is Not Always Better: Pop Up Sprayers
Happy New Year from Desert Rose! We are going to get the year started off by reviewing one of the basic tools to help keep your landscape hydrated. In this month's blog, we will go over the cons of using sprayers (pop up, micro, etc.) as the main source of water for plants in an irrigation system. In the past, we have seen irrigation systems set up with and have had many clients ask about pop up sprayers to water the entire yard. Although this may seem like a good idea since

Question of the Week 01/02/2020
Q: My roses are leafing out in the winter! Is this going to cause problems in the spring? A: When we have warm winters or several days of warm weather, the roses can get confused and start leafing out. The next freezing cold temperatures that pass through WILL freeze and damage the leaves, resulting in them falling off. This is normal for New Mexico. In the spring, the rose will produce a new set of leaves so there is nothing to worry about!
